Every year there's a new wave of headless commerce hype, and every year I have the same conversation with merchants who are convinced they need to rip out their theme and go fully custom. In 2026, for the vast majority of stores I work with, Shopify 2.0 is still the right call — and it's not close.
The pitch for headless is obvious on paper: total control over the frontend, framework freedom, and the promise of best-in-class performance. What gets left out of that pitch is the cost. A headless build means owning your own hosting, your own deploy pipeline, your own cart and checkout syncing, and a permanent engineering dependency to keep it all running. Shopify 2.0 gives you 90% of that flexibility through sections, JSON templates, and the Theme Architecture, without any of that operational overhead.
Sections everywhere — the core of Shopify 2.0 — means merchants can rearrange, add, and remove content blocks on any template without touching code. That's not a small thing. It's the difference between a merchant shipping a homepage change themselves in an afternoon and waiting a week for a developer to be available. I've built stores on both sides of this line, and the stores that move fastest post-launch are almost always the ones where the merchandising team isn't blocked on engineering for routine changes.
On performance, the gap has also mostly closed. With lazy loading, resource hints, image compression, and code splitting done properly in Liquid, a well-built Shopify 2.0 theme can hit the same Core Web Vitals targets as a custom headless frontend — I've shipped several that do. The performance problems people blame on 'Shopify' are almost always poorly optimized themes, not a platform ceiling.
None of this means headless is never the right answer. If you're running a genuinely unique frontend experience across multiple sales channels, or you need a frontend framework Shopify's theme layer can't express, Hydrogen or a custom headless build earns its complexity. But for a single storefront that needs to convert well, iterate fast, and stay maintainable by a lean team — Shopify 2.0 remains the pragmatic, high-leverage choice in 2026.
